You guys know we’ve been decorating our new home slowly but surely (well, more slowly than anything else, but it is coming along lol). We had every intention of starting with the main floor when we first moved in – because this is what people see – but somehow that didn’t happen and we’re nearing our way to completing the entire second floor first. Other than the foyer, the entire main floor remains empty and undecorated, but we’ll leave that for 2020!

In the meantime, we decided to tackle the second floor landing that you see at the top of the stairs. I really disliked how we had dumped random furniture here on move-in day, and it pretty much hadn’t changed over the past 8 months. One of the pieces we originally put there was a giant mirror leaning up against the wall – and while I loved the convenience of it (especially with the great lighting that comes in from the skylight above) – it really didn’t add any beauty to the space.

So, we decided to get rid of the mirror and cabinet and design a visually-pleasing gallery wall that would capture the eye as you first come up the stairs. This is where we enlisted the help of Desenio and their huge selection of on-trend and attractive wall decor. They design hundreds of high-quality posters in a variety of styles and trends suitable for any home decor project – and best of all for any budget! All of their prints are budget-friendly and are available in an array of difference sizes. What I especially love about Desenio is that if you want to create a gallery wall with just a few prints or want to fill up an entire wall – they have pre-curated collections which take the difficulty out of pairing art together. You simply decide on the style or colour you had in mind, then select from their gallery wall collections.

For this project I decided on drawing from a few of Desenio’s gallery wall collections and piecing together a personalized design that suited the space and picked up on a fun vintage chair I wanted to use in the vignette. Since this was such a large wall (10’ ceilings), I selected 11 different posters (*Design Tip: Always use an odd number) that would cover most of the wall above the console table and chair. These are the prints I selected, and I couldn’t be happier with how they all worked together:

This is the first gallery wall ever I’ve ever tackled (also the first pictures I’ve ever hung alone lol) and I couldn’t be more proud of myself haha (more so because they are straight and have a perfect 1.5” between each frame). I’m so happy with the way that it turned out that I wanted to share how you can create a similar gallery wall – whether large or small – and be just as pleased with the final results.

HOW TO CREATE A GALLERY WALL:
Step #1: Select posters from Desenio that speak to you and make you happy
Step #2: Frame them in a variety of frame sizes and materials (I used a mix of white and gold frames)
Step #3: Measure your wall (height and width), decide how high off the floor your bottom row will begin, and lay out guides out on a large surface of your floor.
Step #4: Lay your framed art within your guides on the floor, and piece them together like a puzzle (*This will take a bit of time to get right). Be sure to leave equal spaces between each frame for a professional-looking gallery.
Step #5: Find the centre point of your gallery and mark this measurement on the wall.
Step #6: Start hanging art from the centre of the bottom row (then left side, right side, repeat), to compensate for any error in measurement, then work your way onto the next upper level using the same centre-out method. I used a nail and screwdriver, but feel free to use any hanging method you prefer.

Our second floor landing has now become my favourite place in the entire house, and it makes me smile each time I walk up the stairs.
