KITCHEN BREAKFAST NOOK REVEAL
To say this reveal was an easy-peasy design and that it came together quick and seamlessly would just not be true. In fact, this small, all-white space has caused me so much anxiety over the past few months that I felt like throwing in the towel on more than one occasion. It really shouldn’t have been like that – being a blank canvas and all – but maybe it was the fact that I started the project at the height of a pandemic and my nerves were already shot so I couldn’t quite focus on the task at hand. Yes, that was it!
Anyways, fast-forward three months and I’m happy to finally reveal the finished Kitchen Breakfast Nook! While the space is “finished” there are still a few things that I would love to add but only when the time is right. Would you guys put a rug under a dining table that kids eat at multiple times per day? This was my dilemma with a rug (which in my opinion DOES need to be here for layering and balance), however, I opted against one purely for my own sanity. I seem to be making life more difficult these days with my decor choices – so this was not going to be one of them. Also, I want to continue adding more art (new and vintage) around the west window, but this is something that takes time and I wasn’t going to rush it just for the purpose of posting.
But now let me tell you a little more about what IS in this space – starting with the amazing Array LED Chandelier from Dainolite! What initially attracted me to this light was it’s modern, linear lines which was just what I was looking for in the breakfast area. The aged brass coordinates with my kitchen hardware almost identically (seriously too perfect) – so it was a match made in heaven if you ask me. It’s also just the right amount of modern against all the vintage and antique pieces I have in this space. I mean, how great does it look hanging above this antique dining table? The lines mimic the legs of the table, and it hangs perfectly centre above the eating area. Also very important to me is how a light fixture flows when you can see it from multiple rooms and angles in a home. This Dainolite fixture can be seen from the kitchen and family room – yet, it coordinates with the other lighting I have in those spaces and flows perfectly!
Next up are these absolutely stunning lined drapery panels from Pattern Homes. I struggled with what style of drape to hang in this space (you may have seen my B&W mistake on IG Stories a few months ago), but am I ever glad I held out for these beauties. I found Shirley from Pattern Homes on Etsy and instantly fell in love with her colourful selection of velvet panels. This is the Cool Spring colour in the Cartridge Pleats style, and I had the panels custom made to my exact measurement and preferences. I can’t rave enough about the quality of the velvet fabric and her craftsmanship, so much so that I’m already planning out my next order for another upcoming room reveal. Shirley included all the drapery hooks because I told her I would be hanging the panels with drapery rings, and she also included two tie backs if I wanted to use them as well. If you’re anything like me, selecting a fabric colour online for a custom project can feel risky because if the colour is wrong you can’t return it. That’s why Shirley offers a fabric sample package which I ordered beforehand to ensure that the colour I chose would be just right – and was it ever! This shade of blue is just what I had been hoping for, and it seamlessly flows right through the kitchen and family room.
As already mentioned, the antique 5’ round dining table was a steal on FB Marketplace that I just couldn’t pass up. I toyed with the idea of a high-quality, luxury dining table for this room, but again – since this is where my kids eat, execute highly messy art projects, and play for hours on – I wasn’t ready to invest in a piece of furniture only for it to be destroyed within days. That being said, I found this very high-quality antique piece for only $300 and it was well worth the hassle I put my hubby through to get it. It definitely does show some wear and tear on the tabletop and along the edges, but this can be a future DIY project once the kids are a little older.
To contrast with the dark wood and antique style of the table, I chose a classic Eiffel chair – with and without armrests – that could be easy to wiped down and kept clean. I searched high and low for these white ones with gold legs, and discovered that the price ranges quite a bit for this chair and you can unknowingly pay WAY TOO MUCH for it if you don’t do your research. I scored the armless ones for $39/each (WOW right?!), and $59/each for the ones with arms from Montreal-based Prunelle. All of their chairs are still 40% off so if you’ve been looking for an MCM style chair – they probably have it – and on sale!
Another FB find was the Chinoiserie-style console table. This was a tricky wall because I couldn’t have any piece of furniture on it that was too deep and would block the walking space between it and the kitchen island. This was a last-minute purchase when I had thought I would ultimately have to leave this wall blank after a slew of fails. But thankfully I stumbled across this one that only cost $150 and just happened to be painted the EXACT same shade of blue as the drapes – win win! At only 10”D and the exact width of the wall – it was a perfect fit.
The next challenge for this wall was what kind of artwork to hang above the console table. The ceilings are quite high in the kitchen, but because of the light switch and home alarm panel, it left the usable space to be quite narrow. After numerous failed attempts at purchasing the perfect abstract artwork (during a pandemic when stores were either closed or empty and online ordering just took too long), I decided to try my hand at painting my own art. This was the best decision I could have made. I purchased the correct size canvas at Michaels along with the paint colours that I wanted in the space, and painted this abstract masterpiece (if I don’t say so myself hehe) that I’m so in love with. This has now led me to believe that I’m an artist and will only be painting my own artwork from hereon out – who am I kidding?! LOL
And last but not least, I have to chat about this breakfast set-up that the kids and I demolished after this shoot HAHA. How could we leave a perfectly good pie, croissants and other goodies and NOT dig in?! I’ve had my eye on this garden tile dinnerware set for a long time, and it finally felt like just the right fit for this room. I picked up the mugs and dessert plates, but would love to add the dinner plates, saucers and tea cups too! Only caveat is that they are hand-wash only which, like I said somewhere above, is my downfall when it comes to pretty decor items. I nearly had a heart-attack this morning when I discovered my husband had put a mug in the dishwasher, which now means they are off-limits and will only be pulled out on special occasions – shame on me!
Well, I hope you loved this reveal and that it inspires some of your own decor projects. Let me know in the comments below which is your favourite element of this room, or what’s motivating you to beautify your home!
